Ian Douglas Sutherland

1939-2023

This is a time of sadness for our Saskatoon Community Foundation family as we learned of the sudden passing of Ian Sutherland and remember his friendship and exemplary service to the community over the years. We want to express our deep condolences to Meredith, Duncan, Megan, and all of Ian’s family at this time.

Ian’s wisdom, guidance, and long service made Saskatoon Community Foundation stronger, and our board, volunteers, and staff, past and present, feel blessed to have known and worked with him.

His valuable contributions to the foundation cannot be overstated. He served as board member, as the longstanding chair of its Investment Committee, and as a member of the Audit, Governance, and Grants Committees.

Born in Lethbridge Alberta to Douglas and Margaret Sutherland, Ian met and married his great love Meredith in 1969, and later welcomed children Duncan and Megan.

His career included serving as regional manager for a trust company; as vice president responsible for the Medical Affairs Division of a major teaching hospital; and as project manager for the initiatives that created Telehealth Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan’s Health Help Line, and the Western Canadian Children’s Heart Network.

Ian was a leader in his profession, serving on several Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations committees and chairing the Employee Benefits Committee that managed billions of dollars invested on behalf of health care employees.

His community volunteer activities included the Kinsmen Saskatoon and Rotary Club boards and presidency for the Meewasin Rotary Club. He chaired the TCU Place and SaskTel Centre boards and served as vice chair for the Habitat for Humanity board. He actively supported Meals on Wheels, the Salvation Army, and the scouting movement.

In Ian’s memory, his family would welcome donations to Saskatoon Food Bank, Meewasin Rotary Club, or Saskatoon Community Foundation. The funeral will be at 2 PM (1 PM Pacific Time) on Wednesday, April 5th at Saskatoon Funeral Home (306-244-5577). The service will be available via Livestream for those unable to attend.
