Guide to Speaking to Your Advisor

The Donor Advised Spendable Fund is an attractive new fund type which enables donors to make an impact in the community over several years with a fully spendable fund that also earns interest. Donors can achieve their goals for their charitable giving during their lifetime and control the timeline.

  • Your gift is not endowed and is fully disbursable according to your instructions;
  • You may select a specific recipient organization (s) when creating your fund, or you may decide how to disburse grants each year;
  • The time frame for the Donor Advised Spendable Fund is a minimum of three years and a maximum of 15 years, and you choose the schedule;
  • After you establish your fund, the total amount available for granting in the first year is 40% of the capital;
  • The funds not disbursed will be invested and earn interest with Saskatoon Community Foundation pooled funds;
  • A donor may create a Donor Advised Spendable Fund with a gift of $50,000 or greater.

Donor Advised Funds

With Donor Advised Funds, donors are empowered and encouraged to be actively involved each year in recommending recipient charities. Donors seeking the maximum flexibility and control in directing the annual grants from their endowed gifts may establish Donor Advised Funds.

  • Once you establish your Donor Advised Fund, the foundation will contact you each year for instruction on how to disburse the grants from your fund;
  • You may choose to support a charity of personal significance, identify new charities to support, or allocate funds for emerging community needs determined by the Saskatoon Community Foundation Grants Committee;
  • Your gift is endowed and the interest earned will create grants in perpetuity;
  • You may make a single gift or many gifts over the years;
  • A donor may create a Donor Advised Fund with cumulative giving totaling over $50,000.

Community Funds

Community Foundation Grants Committee each year. Community Funds allow the foundation most flexibility to respond to changing community issues. Over 100 charities benefit from Community Funds annually.

  • Your gift is not designated to a specific charity at the time of donation;
  • Gifts are pooled and invested as part of the Give YXE Fund;
  • Every year, the interest earned is used to create grants for charities, determined by the Grants Committee;
  • You may make a single gift or many gifts over the years;
  • Once your cumulative giving reaches the Named Fund threshold of $5,000, you may establish an unrestricted Named Fund to create your personal legacy.

Fully Disbursable Charitable Funds

With a Fully Disbursable Charitable Fund, the foundation will follow your instructions in disbursing your entire donation to one or many charities of your choice over a time frame that you decide. This type of fund offers you as the donor the ability to experience the impact of giving to your community in the near term while enjoying the simplicity of giving through the foundation.

  • A single donation may be directed to one or many charities;
  • You determine the time frame when your fund is disbursed;
  • The foundation can accept donated securities on behalf of small charities who do not have established brokerage accounts;
  • Your fund will have its own donation page so you can invite others to join you in giving or make tribute gifts on special occasions.

Endowed Funds

Donor Designated Funds are endowed funds established by you, the donor, to support one or more specific charitable organizations in perpetuity. The foundation makes disbursements each year to this charity/these charities.

The Donor Designated Fund offers you the ability to personalize your legacy gift in an endowment that reflects your life, your family, and your values.

Field of Interest Funds are endowed funds established by donors who wish to support a charitable field such as arts, education, environment, health, social sector, or youth. Based on the donor’s field of interest, the foundation selects appropriate projects to support, including projects identified for the foundation’s community granting programs.

The Field of Interest Fund allows you to create an endowment that is personalized and targeted to one or more areas you are passionate about. With our extensive community knowledge, we have the ability, expertise, and networks to target your gift according to your wishes.

  • You may make a single gift or many gifts over the years;
  • A donor may create a Designated Fund with cumulative giving totaling over $10,000.

  • Your gift is endowed and your fund will grant to your field of interest in perpetuity;
  • You may make a single gift or many gifts over the years;
  • A donor may create a Field of Interest Fund with cumulative giving totaling over $10,000.
